What better way to remember and document your special holiday moments than record them in a sketchbook alongside foodie notes and receipts stuck in?

Taking your sketchbook with you everywhere, you’ll get into the habit of quick sketching on-site, then working into it with more detail and colour when you get back to the air bnb or villa! Used as a record of sights, sounds and smells it’s a document you can use for bigger artworks when you return home.

Test out different mediums from pencil, ink, colour washes, biro, wax crayon and more. You will be provided with an A5 Seawhite sketchbook to fill through the course of the day, working from holiday photographs and memories. Learning new tips, techniques and drawing skills will inspire many more Holiday Sketchbooks.

Learn a wide range of etching techniques, tips and tricks, that will enable you to expand your ideas. Explore tones and textures through a range of exciting processes.

You will explore sugar lift, open bite, permeable grounds and spit bite aquatint. You will be guided through each of these exciting processes and then be encouraged to work more exploratively and to challenge yourself. Once you are familiar with the effects that can be achieved you will be able to work on your own projects at your own pace, with full support, to achieve finished prints.

Previous experience is helpful, but not essential

A graphite drawing workshop. Celebrate the grandeur and character of trees. As a passionate landscape artist, I often use the beauty of trees to add structure, gestural character and the effects of light. In this workshop the tree becomes the star of the show. I will guide you in focusing on structure, shape, form, texture and the influence of light, to create an original composition reminiscent of tree artists, such as Blaze Cyan. Removing colour will focus your eye on tonal values and high contrast.

Learn a range of essential etching techniques that will get you started on this enthralling process.

You will explore hard and soft grounds, line and tone, open bite and aquatint. Absolute beginners will be guided through every step of the process, whilst those who have experience will be encouraged to work more exploratively. Once you are familiar with the essentials you will be able to work on your own projects at your own pace, with full support, to achieve finished prints.

This course welcomes all levels, from absolute beginners to those who really want to improve their technical expertise.

Suitable for Beginner / Intermediate level

This block of 6 weeks will set weekly drawing challenges that will explore drawing techniques and mark making skills, enabling you to develop new & extended ways of using materials.

The workshops will enable you to expand on your own personal drawing style and introduce many new methods. I will demonstrate how to begin and plan drawings, how to combine techniques together and create the effects you’ve always been looking for, and some that you never knew existed! We will work from observation - still life, plants, portrait and landscape imagery. You will also be able to select your own starting points and work towards finished pieces.

Inspired by my latest collection of Shadow Drawings, I will share with you the relationship between object and shadow, light and dark, tangible and ethereal.

Just when you think you’ve created the darkest dark… there’s room for even greater contrast. Building up layers and tone through pencil and water-soluble graphite, you can explore the myriad of marks and textures that make up a landscape. Majestic trees are the protagonists of the landscapes that you will be tackling, working from a selection of photographs, supplied by the tutor.

What you will learn:

• How to make the most of using pencils + an introduction to all the various types of pencils on offer, from 4H to 8B, graphite blocks and powders.

• Explore water-soluble graphite techniques

• Creating the darkest darks and lightest lights

• A myriad of marks and effects

• Composition

• Produce a finished or almost finished drawing to take home

Throw caution to the wind….go big! In this workshop you are allowed to draw on the walls! On large sheets of paper, you’ll be happily sketching all day long. Scaling up smaller objects or landscape imagery is fun and challenging, presenting new ways of looking and observing. Working upright is energising and freeing. You’ll be amazed at the results.

“One of the best workshops I’ve run in years – the work was truly outstanding!” says tutor Wendy Rhodes when describing her Drawing with a Difference workshop. It’s a chance to have a bit of fun, relax and have a go. Working from a group of objects, you’ll make your own paint brush, experiment with paints, ink, drawing materials and other tools and equipment to produce interesting and unique work which will surprise you!

What you will learn:

• Learn about the different marks possible with an unusual selection of found tools and brushes

• Learn how to manipulate mark making through the handling of tools

• How to build explorative drawings in layers

• How to relax and have fun with drawing

Suitable for all levels of ability.

Beyond the hard ground line, this course will take you through the exciting and liberating processes of sugar-lift aquatint and spit-bite. These techniques liberate the artist in the etching room, allowing you to draw with the same freedom you would experience in a sketchbook. Explorative hard ground and experimental varnish resists will finish your etching.

During the weekend, we will aim to work across 2 or 3 different etching plates, providing you with a series of proof prints. You will be able to work on your own projects at your own pace, with full support, to achieve finished prints for you to take home.
